6th Grade GEOMETRY: Area, Volume & Surface Area

When teaching the unit of geometry to your students be sure to include activities that are engaging and include a variety of applications.  It is important for students to understand and conceptualize the meaning of area, surface area, and volume.

I suggest incorporating graphic organizers, mazes, riddles and coloring pages into your unit plan when introducing geometry to your students.

Here are just some of the activities that I have successfully used with my 6th-graders:

AREA of TRIANGLE, PARALLELOGRAM, TRAPEZOID Word Problems wThis resource includes 10 real-world AREA word problems that students must solve and explain using problem-solving strategies.

Each graphic organizer presents students with a word problem. Students must then organize the information they are given, SOLVE, JUSTIFY their work and EXPLAIN their solution. The answer key has the correct solutions as well as sample work.

I use this activity with pair-shares, as homework, stations, classwork, early finishers, and assessment prep.

Topics Covered:
✔ Area of Parallelograms
✔ Area of Triangles
✔ Area of Trapezoids
✔ Area on the Coordinate Plane
✔ Area of Composite Figures
Area of Parallelograms, Trapezoids, Triangles and Composite Figures

2. Volume & Surface Area of Prisms

VOLUME & SURFACE AREA OF PRISMS This resource includes 10 real-world VOLUME & SURFACE AREA of PRISMS word problems that students must solve and explain using problem-solving strategies. Each worksheet presents students with a word problem. Students must then organize the information they are given, SOLVE, JUSTIFY their work and EXPLAIN their solution. Topics: Volume of Rectangular Prisms & Triangular Prisms, Surface Area of Rectangular Prisms & Triangular Prisms Common Core: 6.G.2, 6.G.4:

Have your students apply their understanding of the AREA OF TRIANGLES with these fun activities including a maze, riddle and coloring activity.

What is Included:

__ Finding the area of Triangles COLORING ACTIVITY

Students are prompted to find the area of various triangles when given the measurements of the base and height. Students use their solutions to color the picture.

__ Finding the area of Triangles MAZE

This is a self-checking worksheet that allows students to strengthen their skills by finding the area of the given triangle. Students use their solutions to navigate through the puzzle.

__ Finding the area of Triangles RIDDLE

Students solve for the area of nine triangles and use the values to solve the riddle.

All 3 of these activities allow students to practice Finding the area of Triangles while incorporating fun into the classroom!
